About the species

Amanita muscaria, the fly agaric, is one of the most recognisable mushrooms of the northern forests. It is common throughout Finland and Norway.1, 2

How to recognise it. The cap is typically 10–20 cm across, yellowish-red to bright red, sticky when moist and finely striated towards the edge.2 Orange and yellow forms also occur, and the colour fades with age.1, 3 The white spots on the cap are remnants of the universal veil, the membrane that encloses the young mushroom.1, 2 The gills are white, and the white flesh turns yellowish just beneath the cap skin.1 The white stem carries a hanging, grooved ring and ends in a swollen base covered in rings of scales.1, 2

Where it grows. The fly agaric forms mycorrhiza – a partnership with the roots of living trees – especially with birch, and also with spruce, pine and other species.2, 3 It grows in both deciduous and coniferous forest, and also in parks and gardens.1, 2

How it differs from the other two species in our range. Amanita regalis, the royal fly agaric, has a yellowish-brown cap with pale spots, a light-brown stem, and a grooved ring like the fly agaric’s but with brown on the grooves. It grows in spruce-dominated moss forest and is rarer than the fly agaric.4 Amanita pantherina, the panther cap, is smaller – its cap is typically 5–10 cm across3 – and grey-brown to ochre, with small white flakes arranged in concentric rings. Its ring is narrow and without grooves, and its swollen base has a distinct upper rim.5

How we prepare it

We work only with young, round caps. Stems and mixed material are never used, which keeps the raw material consistent from one batch to the next. After harvesting in Nordic forests, including Finland and Sweden, the caps are cleaned and dried close to the harvest area on professional industrial drying equipment, so the process is controlled and repeatable.

Muscaria is dried at 35–40 °C – a lower temperature than the 50 °C we use for pantherina and regalis – to hold its colour and form. As a natural product, colour, shape and size vary between individual caps. Orders are prepared, packed and dispatched by our fulfilment partners in Denmark, Finland and Estonia, with tracked delivery across Europe.

Laboratory testing

Every batch is third-party laboratory tested for heavy metals and muscimol before it moves into fulfilment.

Each box carries a QR code. Scan it to verify the laboratory results for your product.

Storage and shelf life

Keep the caps in their original packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is up to 2 years.

Frequently asked questions

How are the caps dried, and at what temperature?

Our Amanita muscaria caps are dried at 35–40 °C on professional industrial drying equipment, so the process is controlled and repeatable from batch to batch. That is lower than the 50 °C used for pantherina and regalis – chosen to hold the caps’ colour and form. Drying takes place close to the harvest area.

Is every batch lab tested – what is tested?

Yes. Every batch is third-party laboratory tested for heavy metals and muscimol. Each box carries a QR code that you can scan to verify the laboratory results for your product.

Why do you sell only whole caps and not powder?

Whole caps let you see exactly what you are buying: the cap’s shape, surface and structure stay visible, which ground powder does not allow. We work only with young, round caps – never stems or mixed material – which also keeps each batch consistent.

What is the difference between Amanita muscaria, pantherina and regalis?

All three are Amanita species from Nordic forests, but they look different and are prepared differently. Amanita muscaria has a red to orange cap with white spots and is dried at 35–40 °C (25, 50 or 75 g). Amanita pantherina has a smaller grey-brown to ochre cap with small white flakes; Amanita regalis has a yellowish-brown cap. Both are dried at 50 °C (10 g and 15 g boxes).

How should dried Amanita be stored, and how long does it keep?

Keep the caps in their original packaging, in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Shelf life is up to 2 years.

Where and when are the mushrooms harvested?

Our Amanita muscaria is harvested in Nordic forests, including Finland and Sweden, from high summer to early autumn, and dried close to the harvest area.

Is Amanita muscaria the same as the fly agaric?

Yes. Fly agaric is the common English name for Amanita muscaria. In the Nordic languages it is called röd flugsvamp (Swedish), rød fluesvamp (Danish), rød fluesopp (Norwegian) and punakärpässieni (Finnish).

Why do the caps vary in colour?

The fly agaric’s colour varies naturally: fresh caps range from yellowish-red to bright red, orange and yellow forms occur, and the colour fades with age. We dry at a low 35–40 °C to hold colour and form, but each cap is a natural product, so colour, shape and size vary.
