Amanita muscaria vs psilocybin: is fly agaric a magic mushroom?
Amanita muscaria is not a magic mushroom. It contains no psilocybin. Its active compounds are ibotenic acid and muscimol, which act on a different system in the brain. This guide compares the two side by side.

Is Amanita muscaria a magic mushroom?
No. “Magic mushrooms” are species that contain psilocybin. Amanita muscaria, the fly agaric, does not contain psilocybin.1 Its main active compounds are ibotenic acid and muscimol, which act on a different system in the brain and produce a different kind of effect.1,4
| Fly agaric (Amanita muscaria) | Psilocybin mushrooms | |
|---|---|---|
| Main active compound | Muscimol, with its precursor ibotenic acid1 | Psilocybin, converted in the body to psilocin2 |
| Acts on | GABAA receptors (muscimol) and NMDA receptors (ibotenic acid)1,4 | Serotonin 5-HT2A receptors2 |
| Type of substance | Central nervous system depressant3 | Classic psychedelic of the tryptamine class2 |
| Onset | 30 minutes to 2 hours4 | 30–60 minutes2 |
| Duration | Usually 6–8 hours4 | 3–6 hours2 |
| US federal status | Not federally scheduled (Louisiana is an exception)3 | Schedule I controlled substance2,3 |
Does fly agaric contain psilocybin?
No. Amanita muscaria does not contain psilocybin. Its primary psychoactive compound is muscimol, and ibotenic acid is the precursor that the body and the drying process convert into it.1
The confusion is understandable. Both are mushrooms, both alter the mind, and sellers have sometimes blurred the line. Researchers have warned that interest in psilocybin is being used to market Amanita muscaria products, with labelling that does not make the difference clear.3
How do the two work in the brain?
They act on different receptor systems. Psilocybin is converted to psilocin, which activates serotonin 5-HT2A receptors.2 Muscimol is a highly selective agonist of GABAA receptors and does not interact with 5-HT2A receptors at all.1
GABA is the brain’s main inhibitory signal, which is why researchers describe muscimol as a central nervous system depressant, closer in action to alcohol or benzodiazepines than to a classic psychedelic.3 Ibotenic acid adds an opposing, excitatory action through NMDA receptors.4
How do the effects differ?
Psilocybin typically produces changes in perception and in the sense of time and space, with intense emotions that can range from bliss to terror.5 Fly agaric poisoning is described differently: confusion, agitation, loss of coordination, muscle tremors, nausea and vomiting, hallucinations and disturbed consciousness.4
The timing differs too. Psilocybin’s effects begin within 30–60 minutes and last 3–6 hours.2 Fly agaric symptoms appear within 30 minutes to 2 hours, peak at 2–3 hours and usually last 6–8 hours.4
Which is more dangerous?
The two carry different risks, and the sources we reviewed describe the physical risks of fly agaric as the more serious. Reviews describe psilocybin as having low physiological toxicity, with overdose very rare, while warning of “bad trips” and of risks for people with a history of psychotic disorders.2
Fly agaric poisonings, by contrast, can involve seizures, coma and respiratory failure, and deaths have been documented.4 Its compound levels also vary substantially between mushrooms, which makes effects hard to predict.4 Neither should be thought of as safe.
Can you mix fly agaric and psilocybin mushrooms?
We have found no reliable research on combining them, so there is no evidence-based answer. The two act on different systems, and each carries its own risks. We do not recommend it.
Is the legal status the same?
No, and it differs by country. In the United States, psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance, while Amanita muscaria is not federally scheduled, with Louisiana as an exception.2,3 Laws elsewhere vary. Check the rules where you live.
What does Nordic Nita sell?
Nordic Nita sells whole dried caps of Amanita muscaria and two related species. We do not sell psilocybin mushrooms. Every batch is third-party laboratory tested. You can see the range in the Nordic Nita collection.
Frequently asked questions
Is Amanita muscaria a magic mushroom?
No. Magic mushrooms contain psilocybin. Amanita muscaria does not contain psilocybin. Its main active compounds are ibotenic acid and muscimol.
Does Amanita muscaria contain psilocybin?
No. Its primary psychoactive compound is muscimol, which acts on GABA-A receptors and not on the serotonin receptors that psilocybin targets.
What is the difference between Amanita muscaria and psilocybin mushrooms?
They contain different compounds that act on different brain systems. Muscimol from fly agaric acts on GABA-A receptors and is described as a central nervous system depressant. Psilocybin acts on serotonin 5-HT2A receptors and is a classic psychedelic.
Which lasts longer, fly agaric or psilocybin?
Fly agaric symptoms usually last 6 to 8 hours. The effects of psilocybin last 3 to 6 hours.
Is Amanita muscaria legal where psilocybin is not?
In the United States psilocybin is a Schedule I controlled substance, while Amanita muscaria is not federally scheduled, with Louisiana as an exception. Laws in other countries vary, so check the rules where you live.
